Spartanburg is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The population was 5,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Spartanburg is the home of Clemson University and Mount Zion Baptist Church. The history of Spartanburg goes back to 1814 when General James Wilkinson founded what is now known as Spartanburg County. He named it after his general's hometown, Sparta, Greece. In 1821, he also founded a township in what would become Spartanburg County, which became an incorporated town in 1872. In 1907, Clemson University was founded here on land donated by banker Jeptha Giddings and his wife Anna Stephenson Giddings. The university grew rapidly with enrollment reaching 20,000 students by 1930; however World War II delayed its full development until the early 1960s when it acquired additional land adjacent to Interstate 95 and built two main campuses—one on Sperry Street and one on Hawkins Avenue—with an associated library and other facilities totaling . The city of Spartanburg annexed neighboring townships in 1957 including Rock Hill (1957), Union (1957), Lenoir (1958), Etowah (1959) and Pikeville (1960). This annexation increased the population of the City of Spartenburg from 3,500 to 10,000 residents over a period of six years. A Comprehensive Plan for Growth was developed in 1961 which called for more than doubling the size of the city with growth occurring throughout all five municipalities within that plan area: City Centre/Spartanburg Downtown; Park East/University Drive; Central Business District/Greenville Center; Eastern Market/Lenoir Road; North Willow Branch/Willis Mill Rd.; and Southern Hills Branch/Highlands Ave. A referendum approved this proposal by wide margins resulting in an increase from 50% to 75%. The Comprehensive Plan did not include any new housing developments or annexations but instead created 6000 acres within boundaries defined by Streetsboro-Winston-Salem Rd., Greenwood-Muncie Rd., Summerdale-Lenoir Rd., Rocky Mount-New Hope Rd., Hartsville- Springdale Rd., Duncan Station - Holmes Chapel Rd., Noble St.-Old Fort area & Allendale areas southward into Carteret Parish & eastward into Tyrrell Parish This large expansion provided many jobs during those years as well as larger schools such as Clemson College located on I-95 just outside downtown Spartenburg limits while State Farm Insurance Company had its headquarters off Hawkins Avenue near Memorial Stadium where college football games were played prior to their move to New York City beginning in 2017

In 1836 Plantation owner James Gist developed an orange grove around Duck Creek that became one of Sparta's many successful businesses Farming became an important industry in early days with slaves being used to tend fields until 1865 when Union troops occupied South Carolina following Confederate surrender at Appomattox Court House As slavery ended so did opportunity for most blacks in South Carolina but some managed to maintain their grip on political power until after Reconstruction began in 1875 After Reconstruction whites regained control over politics via white supremacy policies which lasted until 1960s During this time many black men were drafted into army or navy service during World War II but all opened up shop afterwards due to postwar discrimination against African Americans
