There is no one definitive answer to this question, as the history of firearms in Spartanburg can be quite diverse. However, some of the earliest firearms to arrive in the area were rifles and pistols used by Native Americans. In 1811, a group of Scottish colonists founded a small town on the Yadkin River in what is now Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The town was named for General James Robertson, who had led an unsuccessful attempt to take Savannah in Georgia in 1807. By 1830, there were over 50 people living in Spartanburg County. Additionally, early settlers developed a strong connection to their guns and ammunition. One such settler was John Swanton Sr., who operated a shotgun shop and rifle range near his home until his death in 1868. In 1861, Confederate artillery batteries fought at Fort Sumter during the American Civil War. This event marked the beginning of an influx of new firearms into Spartanburg County from nearby states. Over time, many different types of firearms were used here including shotguns (which began appearing around 1900), handguns (such as revolvers), rifles (including shotguns and assault rifles), and even machineguns (such as those fielded by the U S Army during World War II). After the war ended, many restrictions were placed on firearm ownership within South Carolina due to new state laws that came into effect following Reconstruction which aimed to Promote racial equality throughout the state. These regulations included bans on handguns and rifle hunting; however, gun rights continued to be vigorously defended through lawsuits and protests throughout much of south Carolina's history. Spartanburg is a town located in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 15,898 at the 2010 census. Spartanburg is the county seat and the largest city of Spartanburg County. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg–Anderson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what would become Spartanburg County was made on October 7, 1836 by George Hance and brothers John and James Hance. The original site of Spartanburg was on land that now forms part of the eastern edge of downtown Spartanburg. A post office called "Spartanburgh" was established in 1837, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1908. On January 1, 1839, a group of nine men led by Colonel Alexander Stephens purchased 2 million acres (10 km²) in present-day south central Spartanburg County from Trustees for $5 per acre ($100 to $160 per square kilometer). This land included much of what would become downtown Spartenburg. On February 3rd this same year, General David Hunter named Confederate Major General Robert Ewell's Headquarters at Mount Pleasant after Colonel Stephens' purchase which became known as "Ewell's Hill". In 1840, two years after Stephens' purchase of the land around today's downtown Spartenburg, another group bought 132 acres (50 km²) northeast of town for $2 per acre ($40 to $60 per square kilometer). This area would eventually become home to many businesses including Orchard Supply Co., Packing Company No. 8 (later PepsiCo), Avery Dennison & Sons Furniture Mfg., JBL Radio Laboratories Inc., Ben-Hur Paper and News Service Co., among others. In 1843 an act were passed providing for a school district within Spartanburg County which opened its doors on December 9th that year with twenty students enrolled grades one through six inclusive. A new courthouse began construction on October 10th, 1845 near what is now Union Street/Hwy 411 west of downtown Spartenburg under direction from Governor Andrew Johnson who also served as Superintendent of Schools for South Carolina during this time period After several months active construction New Market Courthouse finally opened its doors to the public on November 5th 1865 following renovations costing over $200K . Corinthian columns still stand today as a testimonial to this building’s importance during this time period . In 1870 there were only seventytwo residents living in downtown Spartenburg while four hundred ninety five residents lived outside town limits . However with growing industry; business districts appeared all over southwestern South Carolina within miles or just across state lines . Downtown SpartansBURGH experienced rapid growth thanks largely to railroad development however competition from other small towns throughout SC accelerated some late 1800s rural exodus out into neighboring states NC&VA especially since mines closed there due water depletion plus lack thereof restrictions then those days
Spartanburg was founded in 1837 as a trading post on the Upper Ashley River. It became an agricultural center during the late 1800s, and later became a manufacturing center for clothing and machines. The city was named for General James A. McDowell, who helped lead the Confederate States of America in the Battle of Fort Sumter in 1861.
