It is part of the Columbia metropolitan area. Spartanburg was founded in 1836 by General Robert E. Lee and his retinue as part of the Transylvania Company's plan to find a new home for Confederate general Stonewall Jackson after he had been sent south to join General Averill Harriman's Union army at battle near Maysville, Kentucky. The first permanent white residents arrived in 1838 when a group of thirteen families from eastern North Carolina crossed the Savannah River into present-day South Carolina on horseback and rafts. They named their town "Spartanburg" after General Lee's regiment, which had just returned from several months fighting in Virginia during the American Civil War (1861–1865). The first post office was established in 1840; it was renamed "Pemberton" in 1845 because its founder (Captain Pemberton) had served as PostmasterGeneral for South Carolina under James Kenedy (1795–1875). In 1861, Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter while Ulysses S. Grant was leading an invasion of Georgia; four civilians were killed and twelve others were wounded as a result. Asa Pugh built a small fort here to provide security for civilian visitors coming through Sumter Harbor on their way southward; this fortification is now known as Pugh Hall inside the Municipal Building complex located within downtown Spartanburg. In 1865, Confederate General Jubal Early burned down Washington Denny plantation outside Sparta with some local people still residing there; no one was injured or killed as a result. During Reconstruction following Reconstruction period policies by President Abraham Lincoln that aimed to end slavery throughout all southern states except those that became states of the Union through secession, Spartanburg became an important center for black civil rights activity and education due to its large slave population then numbering about 5% of its total population (it would eventually reach 25%.) This included starting what is now called African American Heritage Trail before it even existed statewide within South Carolina! Additionally many African Americans who resided here during Reconstruction came north subsequent to World War II fleeing lynchings taking place across much of America including neighboring North Carolina state where they mainly resided until recent times!
