Spartanburg is located on the Aiken River about southeast of Charleston and about northwest of Greenville. It is bordered by Union County to the east and west and Pickens County to the north. The history of Spartanburg dates back to 1876 when General Alexander Macdonald, leader of Confederate forces during the American Civil War, decided that he would move his army northeastward into Union territory after their victory at Appomattox Court House. He renamed his new city "Spartanburg" in honor of General Macdonald's campaign contributions and support from local citizens. In 1978, Spartanburg became an incorporated town with a mayor-council form of government similar to that found in other southern U S cities such as Atlanta and Memphis. In 2001–2002 voters approved Measure 1 – also known as "The Downtown revitalization plan", which called for major changes including increasing streetlights downtown; renovating or reconstruction of many buildings; establishment of an open-air market along Broad Street; developmentally appropriate use designation for several blocks surrounding Interstate 85; creation/establishment of an arts district near US 1; $5 million dollars towards park funding; displacement (of some businesses) on Broad Street near MLK Jr.'s Drive due to redevelopment plans by nearby municipalities The measure passed with 71% voter approval although it did not include all provisions included in Measure 1A later approved by City Councilmember Paulette Reddick which calls for more streetlights downtown along with large construction projects such as renovation/construction on several blocks surrounding I-85 as well as developmentally appropriate uses designation for certain areas around it . St. Augustine was founded in 1599 by Augustine of Hippo, the father of Roman Catholicism. On May 5, 1795, when South Carolina became a state, its capital was moved from Charleston to Spartanburg. The first white settler in Spartanburg was Jesse Black who arrived in 1821. By 1860, there were over 1,000 white and black residents living in Spartanburg County. African Americans worked as slaves until 1865 when they were emancipated. The slave trade ended with the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and all slaves were freed within one year of that date. The first Lutheran church built in Spartanburg was erected on Meetinghouse Hill in 1852. In 1865 the Methodist Episcopal Church was organized and instruction began at First Baptist Church which had been built two years earlier on York Avenue West near downtown. The Methodist Episcopal congregation purchased land for a schoolhouse on Mission Road which served as their church until it burned down in 1906. A newMethodist church was constructed on Reedy Creek Drive southeast of town after World War I and served as the school’s parish center until it too burned down during the Depression years (1929-1939). In 1907 an electric light plant called the Zion National Light Company was established by Jno Crainer with $4,500 raised from local citizens through a special sales campaign called “Spartanburgh lights up!” The company operated for 11 years before being forced to close due to financial difficulties; however, it left an lasting legacy on Spartanburg society by providing education and economic opportunities for many young people over the years. In 1915 Stroudsburg Electric Service Cooperative opened shop doors at 1070 Market Street adjacent to Wofford High School; this led to Spartanburgh becoming known as “the Electricity Capital of the South” because of this important early development! In 1962 lumber magnate Lamar Hunt donated $25,000 towards erection of a new wing at Stroudsburg University Hospital which has since become world-renowned for its medical research facilities! This gift is still celebrated every year during Hunt U Foundation Day festivities attended by thousands of students and faculty from around the region! With such rich history comes rich cultural heritage that cannot be missed when exploring this wonderful city or county!
The town of Spartanburg was platted in 1851, and the first school was opened in 1852. The town was named for General George Pickens, who fought in the American Revolution. In 1865, Confederate troops burned down the town courthouse and most of the buildings in retaliation for Union forces burning down a Confederate arsenal near Spartanburg. In 1881, a rail line linking Lexington, Kentucky and Rockville Centre, Maryland was built through Spartanburg. The line provided transportation for goods and passengers between these two cities. The tracks were later abandoned and left to rust. In 1915, Spartanburg became an incorporated city. This made it one of the first municipalities in South Carolina to have this type of status. It also allowed it to dedicate more resources to its citizens than other towns in the state at that time. In 1966, Spartanburg became an official county seat of Greenville County by order of then-Governor Aiken. This made it one of the few counties in South Carolina not located within any larger municipality or city
