From 1916 through 1947,Browning-Bayer Corporation produced over 100 million firearms including pistols, rifles, shotguns, machine guns, artillery weapons and more.
Spartanburg is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from Mount Sparta, an ancient stronghold of the Cherokee people. The first settlers in Spartanburg were slaves who arrived by ship from Africa in 1824. In 1850, a post office was established and named for General James Connor, who had won fame during the American Civil War as a general of cavalry. In 1871, Spartanburg became part of South Carolina and was renamed Spartanburg Springs after General John C. Smith's headquarters in nearby Greenville. One of the earliest businesses in Spartanburg was a farm that grew corn and beans on land donated by Samuel Wofford Sr.. In 1868, Spartanburg Agricultural Society was formed to improve farming methods and support local commerce. This society also raised horses and dogs for hunting purposes. In 1870–71, Mr. Troup built a cotton gin on Goose Creek Road between Cemetery Road and State Route 657 (now US 11). He used his mill power to spin cotton into cloth which he sold to traders across the state. By 1880, his gin had developed into one of the largest textile mills in South Carolina with some 3100 employees spinning fabrics for export around the world The new town hall building project began in 1907 with funds provided by Mrs Sarah Easley Simons using her own money from her woolen business which she operated out of her home until her death in 1916 In 1912–13 bricklayer William Burt started construction on what would become known as "the most beautiful commercial building ever erected" – now known as Town Hall Square State Senator Robert Horry served as mayor from 1915-1920; he is also honored with a statue outside Town Hall Square . Mayor Horry authorized $5 million dollars for improvements to south central Spartanburg schools including new buildings (now Pickens Elementary School), athletic fields (later Pickens High School), and an enlargement of Memorial Stadium . These projects were completed during his term but it wasn't until 1924 when high school graduate Harry Gibbs became superintendent
Spartanburg was founded by the Spartan family in 1795. The town was named for the ancient city of Sparta, which is located in present-day Greece. In 1810, Confederate General Robert E. Lee visited Spartanburg and decided to make it his headquarters during the Civil War. The town lost much of its population during the war, but regained some after it ended. Spartangate is a historic district in Spartanburg that was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1970.
