The first white person to live in Simpsonville was Jameson Brown who settled on a tract of land around 1814. In 1868, the town received its own post office from Spartanburg District No.. 3 which had been established two years earlier as an outpost of the new Xanthony Post Office Department on Ashley's Creek where Cherokee Indian Nation camped for supplies during their campaign against General Andrew Jackson's forces besieging Fort Pickens near Charleston Harbor. The townspeople began planting corn and other crops early in the 20th century and soon became known for their products such as flour, potatoes, cheese, butter and eggs. By 1940, local industries included machine shops (manufacturing radios), lumber yards (building homes for people living near large mills) and three hospitals: one operated by Methodist Episcopal Church; another by Southern Baptist Hospital; and one run by Presbyterian Hospital with services including medical care for children born premature or with birth defects associated with defective chromosomes from their mothers' womb In addition to these traditional economic activities there were several small businesses that thrived during those decades including: Grady's Restaurant which served up traditional southern chicken nuggets until 1984; Haircuts Unlimited which did business out of a shed on Main Street until 1978 when they moved into a more modern building; Southern Gospel Choir which performs at many churches throughout Asheboro County each year; Lovejoy Boot & Shoe Shop which made shoes out of old tires until 1982; as well as several convenience stores including J C Penney until 1988 when it closed down because of lack of customers Asheboro County Agricultural Extension Service agent Don Whitehead commented "It has always been interesting to watch this little community grow over time." Today Simpsonville remains an agricultural center with production totaling 1 million bushels per acre along with some manufacturing activity such as window screen making from recycled plastic materials In addition to agriculture there are also retail outlets such as Ebenezer Hardware store specializing in general merchandise items while Piggie's Pizza provides both fast food options within walking distance while also serving up salads., ice cream parlors Candy Land Bakery & Coffee House serve pizza daily while Waffle House serves breakfast all day long In recent years much attention has been given to downtown development plans that call for increasing housing prices while preserving essential aspects like sidewalks and streetlights along what used to be main thoroughfares . There have also been plans announced for developing parcels adjacent to Interstate 95 between I-95 Business Loop 5E/US 301W/Route 11A/ASHLEY COUNTY ROAD Expansive Development Zone will provide jobs not only through construction but job training opportunities for residents who may want careers outside their homes
