As the town of Simpsonville, South Carolina experienced a surge in gun violence in the early 2000s, it became clear that something had to be done. In 1819, Colonel James Aiken laid out a plan for what would become Simpsonville on land that he had acquired from the Cherokees. Today, Simpsonsvillle is known for its beautiful homes and businesses as well as its Olde Towne charm which dates back to 1820 when it was called "New Market." Until after World War II, most of Simpsonville's economic activity took place in agriculture or manufacturing. However, since then some new businesses have started up such as an engineering firm and a health clinic. In addition to its many cultural attractions, Simpsonville has also been home to several major events including the annual Negro Day Parade and Music Festival and the U-S Open Golf Tournament which take place each year in early July.

The town was founded on July 4, 1836 by John and Jane Simpson, who named it for their son Simpson County. In 1852, following a campaign led by General James K. Polk, Simpsonville became part of Confederate States of America and remained so until 1865 when it rejoined the Union. During this time, it experienced harsh times with both slave and freedman markets drawing people from all over the South to buy or sell slaves. In 1870, following Reconstruction, Simpsonville reverted back to its prior white population with limits on black ownership being imposed. Its growth continued during World War II when many industry plants were established in and around town including Allied Aircraft Industries and Pilot Plant No. 7; these institutions have continue to play an important role in local life today. The history of Simpsonville is also intimately associated with that of Spartanburg County which was created adjacent to the town in 1840s as a result of efforts by two plantation owners – John Wilkinson and Samuel Smith – to create aierra (a large cotton-growing area) within Spartanburg County that would be self-sufficient and inaccessible to neighboring counties. The success of this endeavor led to increased investment by Wilkinson and Smith in other aspects of local life such as education and infrastructure development which has resulted in Spartanburg County becoming one ofSouth Carolina's largest media markets as well as one ofthe most heavily populated counties in South Carolina overall.
On December 21, 1881, a group of white men and boys under the leadership of Simpsonville schoolteacher James E. Heyward burned down a black church in Simpsonville. The attack was part of a series of racist incidents throughout the South that year.
