The name "Simpsonville" derived from the Scots word "simon", meaning small or trivial. James Simpson's brother John also settled in what became Simpsonville. One of James' daughters married Andrew Pickens who had a plantation southeast of town. After Andrew Pickens died in 1843, his widow moved to nearby Spartanburg and started a new plantation there with her children. By 1865, most of the original Scottish settlers had either left or been killed by Indian attacks during the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1868 Senator Thomas Sowell established a school on land that now includes much of downtown Simpsonville as well as Pryor Elementary School and several other schools within walking distance including Eastland High School which opened in 1966 and replaced West Side High School which was destroyed by fire in 1984; both since rebuilt. In 1924 Drury College opened up shop here for two months each year before moving to Spartanburg where it still resides today as one of the largest private colleges west of Atlanta
