It is part of the Greenville–Anderson–Mauldin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1837 by John C. Simpson and his family. The original name of the town was "New Zion." In 1881, Simpsonville became known as "Simpsonburg" after General J.C. Simpson's headquarters in that year. The first post office in Simpsonville was established on December 14, 1837, by John C. Simpson Sr., from what is now Highland Park Township; he named it New Zion because he had just moved to this area from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania four months earlier (the first post office being in Lexington). The second post office in town was established on January 17, 1840 by James Aiken with the same name as the first one but within what is now Highland Park Township; it served for twenty-one years before becoming closed on July 1, 1865 due to lack of business interest thereabouts. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,567 people, 547 households and 401 families residing in the village.[3] The population density was 635 people per square mile (250/km²). There were 689 housing units at an average density of 283 per square mile (128/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 98% White and 2% African American.[4] Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2% of the population

Simpsonville is a small town in the U.S. state of South Carolina located on the border of Greenville County and Lexington County. The population was 9,481 at the 2010 census. It is named after General John A. Simpson, who fought in the American Civil War and later served as governor of South Carolina. In 1871, President Ulysses S. Grant donated land to be developed as a new town in what is now Simpsonville after inspecting it during his trip to South Carolina fora survey of Union forces attacking Fort Sumter in April 1861. The original citizens of Simpsonville were white farmers and their black slaves who together formed a vivid local history that has been passed down through oral tradition, family stories and written records since then. The town’s first building was erected on land donated by President Grant in 1871-2: a log cabin built by local farmer Wm Higginson with help from mechanics George Washington Carver and James Jumper Carver II. The first post office opened in 1872, but was moved to its present site two years later when the community took its name from General John A. Simpson (1825-1912). General Simpson had fought against Confederate forces at Bull Run Bridge on July 20, 1861 and had become an international figure for his part in helping provide supplies for Union troops fighting inside Virginia during the US Civil War; he also received awards for his heroism including appointment as brigadier general by President Lincoln upon his return from the war). In 1909, following annexation of Greenville County by South Carolina, Simpsonsville became part of Greenville City Limits – one of only four cities within SC limits that did not secede from the state during Reconstruction (the others being Columbia, Charleston & Beaufort). As such, it retains much vestigial Yankee culture which can be seen throughout its restaurants and businesses—particularly those catering to tourists who often flock to nearby Myrtle Beach or Hilton Head Island while living outside SC limits; however some signs indicate that things are slowly changing with more locals taking up residence hereabouts since2010…. Today’s residents come from all over Spartanburg County including Canaan Valley Farms just east of town along I-95/US 31 (where you can find several excellent places to eat), Indian Hill Farms southeast of town off I-95/US 401 (homegrown produce etc.), Mount Olivet Cemetery northwest across US 301 from town center (containing many interesting graves), White Sands Plantation east off US 321 north into Lexington County near Moultrie Air National Guard Base which straddles SR 824 about midway between towns; numerous smaller villages dotting both sides of SC Route 611 near exits 95A & 95B interchange just south/southwest of town center although they may have no connection whatsoever with either Simpsonsville or Greenville City Limits other than being close enough for shopping purposes…
