By 1870, Simpsonville had a population of over 2,000 people. In 1881, the community became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and clerk-treasurer elected by vote from all residents. In 1903, the First National Bank opened in Simpsonville and soon became one of South Carolina's largest banks. The bank continued to operate until it closed its doors in 1978.
