Simpsonville is located in Spartanburg County, South Carolina and has a population of over 33,000. The town was founded in 1820 by Captain John A. Simpson and his family. It became an important commercial center during the early 1800s due to its location on the main route between Charleston and Savannah. After the war, Simpsonville experienced significant growth as aresult of its strategic location within easy reach of both Charleston and Savannah. Today, Simpsonville remains an important community with strong cultural ties to its historical roots.

Simpsonville is located in the lower Pee Dee River Valley, approximately 20 miles south of Charleston and 5 miles east of Greenville. The community was founded in 1824 by planters who named it for General James Simpson, a U.S. military officer who had fought in the Mexican-American War and the Civil War. The town rapidly grew with its first store, school and church being built within a year. By 1830, Simpsonville boasted a population of over 100 people and was considered one of the most successful small towns in South Carolina. The town suffered during the Panic of 1837 which caused widespread economic decline throughout South Carolina. However, by 1840 Simpsonville had recovered somewhat and began to prosper as an agricultural center with hogs, chickens and corn being major crops. In 1851, a new courthouse was erected on Commerce Street which served as the local government’s office until 1915 when it was replaced by the current building on Main Street. During Reconstruction times Simpsonville became known as an important African American civil rights center due to its role in providing education and employment opportunities to freedmen. In 1865, after Confederate troops retreated from South Carolina following their surrender at Appomattox Court House, many black residents moved into Simpsonvill
On July 3, 1823, a group of farmers in Simpsonville founded the town. The town was named for Colonel Edward A. Simpson, who had donated land to the town. The first settler in Simpsonville was James Sprague.
