Rock Hill, South Carolina is a small town located in the state of South Carolina. It was founded by white Americans in 1787 and became a slave-owning community until the end of slavery in 1865. Rock Hill is now a historic district and tourist destination. The original European settlers were white men from North Carolina who named their land "Rock Hill". They cleared the land and built homes around 1787. The first black person to live in Rock Hill was Moses Gunnison, who arrived with his family in 1792. The town grew quickly because of its strategic location on the Intracoastal Waterway, which made it easy for traders to come and go. From 1801 to 1805, Rock Hill served as a capital of South Carolina. In 1822, President James K. Polk sent troops to assist General Andrew Johnson during the Battle of Fort Sumter. As a result, Governor John Crain set up camp at RockHill and ordered 300 African American soldiers to help garrison the fortification. The first school in Rock Hill was built in 1793 by Captain James Horry after he donated land for a schoolhouse on Broad Street near present day Canton Road. In 1800, Colonel Thomas Gooch established an academy at what is now Rocky Mount Elementary School while also building a farm house on Broad Street that served as home/school offices for several years before being sold off to Professor John Fenton (1766-1845) in 1802 for $2,000 (). Thereafter, Fenton operated one of Africa's earliest commercially successful schools until his death at age 95 due to yellow fever contracted while traveling through Brazil). That same year saw the founding of what would eventually become Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated (ΔΣΘ), one of America's largest chapters with over 2200 members () membership dues totaling $5 per member (). On October 6th 1861 (), Confederate General Robert Ewell attacked Union forces entrenched along Charleston Harbor under Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Beale () resulting in over 50 fatalities including 20 percent of all African American soldiers serving within Confederate forces (). Aftermath: Dixiecrats demand federal action against Confederacy; Stone Mountain Massacre ensues In 1865 following the end of slavery in America, many slaves who had been living near or within reach of battlefields where their masters had fought returned home free but many more remained behind as refugees due to Union military campaigns targeting slave markets across Reconstruction America known as 'the Great Migration'. Many more died whenUnion warships HMS Guerriero and USS Monitor bombarded Palmetto Point outside Kingsville effective August 25th 1865 killing upwards of 1 500 blacks suspected sailors deserters from British vessels HMS Cerberus and HMS Terror along with any whites found aboard those warships including scores women infants children children passengers etc.. With less than 5 months remaining before freedom could be given unconditionally all slaves were required into early dispersal camps throughout south carolina under Yankee occupation known as ' Chelmsford Plan '. This included most residents living eastOf Kingsville along I-95 however some actually managed make it back home eeitcough most notably Drayton Green farmer Elijah Whitehead whose 30 acre plantation directly south Of old Fort Pickens played no role whatsoever wheras 150 plus head hogs laned And ran wild on his 400 acres producing enough hay & straw needed for 200 hogs each @4 cents/acre . About 100 negroes lived on my own 160 acre hog farmstead called Old Plantation next door which I leased from Aiken County Agricultural Society . These people were allowed onto my property only if they contributed labor during planting season & picked up tools & debris left behind ..... much like today’s descendantsof theseAfrican Americans still working hand-in-hand w/their families' farmssteads Today's descendants are proud participantsin local businesses such as rock hill antique store
