Rock Hill, located in Richland County, South Carolina is home to one of the largest rifle scopes collections in the United States. The history of this collection dates back to 1892 when Reverend Wm. Fenton founded the First Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill. Reverend Fenton was a gunsmith who specialized in making rifles and shotguns. His store soon became known for its extensive rifle and shotgun supplies. In 1894, Reverend Fenton donated his entire rifle and shotgun inventory to the South Carolina Historical Society. The society operated the store until 1971 when it closed its doors permanently. From 1892 until 1971, Reverend Fenton's store supplied all of Rock Hill with high-quality Rifle Scope products. This collection includes some of the most well-known brands such as Leupold and Bushnell, as well as lesser-known companies like Pheco optic systems and Hogue grips. Many of these rifles have been preserved and are on display at various locations around town today. The Second World War saw a rise in demand for sniper rifles throughout the world. This demand came about because snipers were used extensively during combat in Europe during that time period. As a result, many rifles from Reverend Fenton's shop were auctioned off off by collectors worldwide resulting in an impressive haul for those interested in owning one of these artifacts! One particular auction took place back in 2007 where over sixty guitars were sold including several rare vintage guitars from Reverend Fenton's collection!

Rock Hill did not fare well during the American Civil War, however, and its military importance diminished. By 1865, Rock Hill had been largely destroyed by Union troops and its residents were forced to flee their homes.
