Rock Hill is a small town in south central South Carolina, about 25 miles (40 km) east of Columbia. The population was 12,747 at the 2000 census. It is one of the two cities in Lexington County and has been part of that county since 1837. Rock Hill was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants around 1800. A post office called "Rock Hill" was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1868, a group of Welsh miners working for the Charleston and Savannah Railroad founded a community called "Munster", which they named after their home country of Munster, Ireland. The name ROCK HILL caught on and the settlement began to grow rapidly. In 1870, a group of Germans prospecting for coal located land adjacent to what is now Rock Hill. They named their new community "Langewood". This community did not survive long as mining operations developed around it; Langewood was abandoned in 1888. However, when railroads arrived in southcentral South Carolina during the late 19th century they brought with them an influx of people looking for work; this led to the founding of several towns along the railroad lines including RISKINGTON near Fayetteville and PORTLAND near Columbia. These settlements were all short-lived because most people left to find jobs elsewhere when railroads became available elsewhere through interstate travel or construction projects such as the Civil War Era Overland Road (now Interstate 95). The last known resident of ROCK HILL before its annexation into Lexington County[1] was John Wray who resided there from 1865 until his death on November 2nd 1902
