They started building a log courthouse and soon other businesses followed suit: grist mill, sawmill, dye house, ferryboat service to Georgetown (now Greenville), brickyard and many more enterprises. This growth continued until about 1840 when an attempt by whites to clean up land near Bogalusa allowed black residents of neighboring Greenwood to move in and start their own business ventures without being interfered with by authorities or private citizens alike; this led to what is today known as "the integration period." White businessmen lost most of their businesses during this time because they could not compete with black entrepreneurs who were able to run their businesses openly and without government interference. These days there are still some white-owned businesses located within Rock Hill but much larger percentages of all businesses are operated by African Americans than ever before

Colonel Rock's plantation at Rocky Mount was located about two miles east of present day Rocky Hill on land grants from Prince George's County over which he held title until his death in 1815. Captains James Cook and Simon Bolivar explored North America between 1789-1790 while ashore at Fort Nassau on Long Island Sound; they may have been influenced by their encounters with this African trader in developing Admiral Arthur Phillip's plan to sail around Africa via India Inland Sea in search of new trade routes China had opened up since its discovery by Portuguese sailors some years earlier
