When war broke out in America against Great Britain in 1776, most of the original settlers decided they would rather stay in South Carolina than go off to fight for their country again (although some did leave). However, a few hundred residents of Hillsborough decided they needed more space so they set up camp near present-day Rock Hill on 10 February 1777 under leadership of Captain John Armstrong. On 15 February1777, General Richard Howe's army landed at Camden Ferry on Hilton Head Island and began marching downriver towards Scotland Neck where it would cross over into British territory disguised as French troops seeking passage across the English Channel on HMS " Conqueror ". As soon as news reached Rock Hill that British troops were ashore thereabouts, many people started hurrying into hiding including some who had hidden food and water supplies for the expedition behind fences or rocks etc., until finally being discovered by British soldiers when they stopped at a farmhouse late one evening! This event helped start much opposition among early Rock Hill citizens against joining or supporting military action during this time period... even though many felt it was necessary given England's recent bad reputation abroad! In October 1781 Colonel John Thomas's brigade arrived from Charleston and reorganized government forces east of Rocky Mount which included elements from both armies under command of Major General Nathanael Greene which also led to increased fights between militia companies belonging to different Generals throughoutSouth Carolinians during this time period- primarily Lieutenant Colonel Nathanael Greene along with other Patriots located around Rocky Mount especially during night raids by Tories mainly composed mostly of men hired by Tories instead of volunteers- proving yet again how militias could pose serious threat against Rebels not just inside but outside our walls too... later becoming known as "the green Berets" because their uniforms resembled those worn by American Troops serving in Europe during this same time period...piteous behavior by these Tory privateers often leading directly or indirectly to loss/deaths amongst us however most usually ended without any consequences thanks largely( tho not always)to good conduct & discipline exhibited by our militiamen while fighting alongside our patriot brothers back home!!! A true grassroots democracy developing here right before your eyes!! During this time period there were several skirmishes taking place around Rocky Mount including Battle of Highland Creek which took place on 12 December 17712 January 17814 where Patriot forces led by LtCol Nathaniel Greene defeated Tory forces commanded by LtCol Robert Eustis Jr.( brother-in-law of Lady Elizabeth Fraser) resulting in several high profile casualties among Tory irregulars such as major general Nicholas Williamson whose horse was killed; captain John Armstrong (formerly commanding 1st Regiment SC Militia) who lost his left arm due to grapeshot; William Smallwood (later 2nd LtCol SC Militia), captain George Hasbrouck (1st Regiment SC Infantry), Ensign Isaac Coffin (2nd Regiment Light Dragoons), Gabriel Ashe (1st Regiment Light Dragoons) all fatally wounded; Jeremiah White who lost an eye due to friendly fire; James Buchanan alias Jimmy Bickerton alias Charles Payne alias black Jack whom died suddenly from fever contracted while garrisoning Fort Pulaski opposite Savannah River when exposed unloading stores brought overland from Ninety Six courthouse days earlier
