In 1795, a group of English colonists named Grantham bought 1,000 acres (400 hectares) in what is now Rock Hill from the Cherokee Nation for £3 per acre. In 1806, Grantham donated 3 more acres (100 hectares) to serve as a village square. In 1830, when Spartanburg County was formed from Union County, it included all of present-day Spartanburg County and most of Pickens County as well as much of modern-day Laurens and Richland counties. On July 4, 1871, local textile businessman James Fenton donated 2 blocks (or 4 acres/km²) to be used as an agricultural center for his farmstead known as "Fenton's Bluff". By 1860, the population of Rock Hill had increased to 1123 people including men and women working on farms or in nearby towns such as Laurens or Richland. In 1861–1862 Confederate Captain John Barnwell served in garrison duty at Fort Wagner near Rocky Hill while General Beauregard prepared for an attack on Charleston Harbor. barnwells account tells how one night he went out drinking with some friends and saw an American force advancing through the town towards his fortification; he ordered his men not to fire but they did anyway killing 12 American soldiers before withdrawing back into their fortifications without surrendering any prisoners or spoils. This event has been cited by some historians as one of the earliest uses of artillery against civilian targets during the Civil War era. In 1881, white supremacists led by Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked black slaves working in nearby Laurens County plantations during the American Civil War (1861-1865). The attacks killed dozens of blacks and left many more injured or homeless. As a result of this attack on African Americans in Rock Hill, several thousand people fled to other parts of south Carolina and North Carolina during Reconstruction (1868-1877). The town's economy slowly recovered after Reconstruction but was hit hard by World War II (1939-1945). Many local businesses were destroyed or closed due to wartime shortages of materials such as tires and rubber.
