Rock Hill is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 5,788 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg–Anderson metropolitan area. Rock Hill is located on U.S. Route 95 and ZIP code 28122. The first white people to live in what is now Rock Hill were five men who came from Georgia in 1818 and named their land "Rock Hill." They started a homestead there, but soon abandoned it because of malaria and other dangers from the wild mosquitoes that infested the area at the time. In 1829 two British officers, Captains Beechey and Murchison, traveled through Spartanburg County on their way to explore new lands in America and they recommended that settlers move to what is now Rock Hill because of its strategic location between two mountains (the Blue Ridge Mountains to the south and Mount Pleasant to the north). The men who had come earlier brought with them horses and mules so they could ride back and forth between their land overlooking Savannah Creek as well as up into Cherokee County for trading purposes; however, by 1829 this system had been disbanded because most traders had moved away due to economic reasons such as competition from Charleston or Savannah. In 1830 three more men showed up from Georgia: John Cateye, James Crosby, Jr., and Thomas Woodward; these men founded a Presbyterian church in what is now downtown Rock Hill which served as both community center and schoolhouse for many years until it burned down in 1928. In 1831 twelve families moved from Athens, Georgia – six families went directly to Rock Hill while six families took over land grant owners' homes near present-day Rocky Mount Road/Upper Cumberland Road where they built churches (the First Presbyterian Church became Methodism), schools (Methodist Episcopal School became African American High School), grocery stores (Moses & Sarah's Grocery Store), post offices (First Baptist Church became Post Office Park today), businesses (Foley Drug Store became Foley's Pizza Place), gas stations (!), four cotton ginners (=one gin per family) – one each for White Settlement #1 on Upper Cumberland Road (#2 was retired after World War II) - all during just one year! All this activity created an already burgeoning community which would soon become known as "The Town". By early 1830 rockhill consisted of about 100 residents including 15 farmers/crofters living off crop production plus 20 slaves working on plantations nearby; by 1840 it had increased to 300 residents with 50 households farming out 6 acres each (most slaves worked outside of town except those used by their owner’s children when they attended school). Growth continued unabated through 1830s & 1840s with increasing enrollment at school then 4 cotton gins added + 2 others starting before 1850 resulting in 16 total operatives spinning product hereabouts by 1860 averaging 10 spindles/hour yielding $220 worth of output annually – enough money “to buy another hog if necessary” according to Lowndes…rockhill must have been pretty busy indeed! Rock Hill is the seat of Tyrrell County, South Carolina. The town was founded in 1814 by General James Johnston and named for him. It became a county seat in 1847 and has been located here ever since. The population as of the 2010 census was 15,253. The first settler in what is now Tyrrell County was Captain John Ritchie, who arrived in 1775 from Virginia. He built a small cabin on the Kannapolis River and named it Rock Hill after his hill near Charlottesville, Virginia where he had resided before coming to America. In 1814, General James Johnston arrived at Rock Hill with his army following the Battle of New Bern against Cornwallis’s forces. He called the town "Johnston's Town" in honor of Johnston's patron saint and namesake, James Iredell (1719-1800). In 1847, Tyrrell County was created from part of Spartanburg County when that county became divided between Union and Confederate states during the American Civil War. At that time, most of what is now Tyrrell County lay within Spartanburg County; however, a small area east of Rocky Hill along Hiwassee River were transferred to Tyrrell Countyshire including present-day Kingston Springs and other smaller villages situated within Hiwassee National Forest adjacent to the riverine environment rich with fishponds and slow moving creeks which once supported large herds of deer and hippopotamus
