Rock Hill is a town in York County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 5,034 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Myrtle Beach–New Bern–Fort Mill Metropolitan Statistical Area. The original settlement at Rock Hill was founded by Colonel John Brown in 1775 as a small plantation on the Yadkin River in what is now the city of Fort Mill. The town was named for General Robert Ewing Rockhill (1749-1824), an American Revolutionary War veteran and member of the Continental Congress. In 1827, Colonel John Brown's grandson, Arthur Ewing Rockhill Jr., moved his family to Rock Hill from their plantation in Fort Mill and began operations as a general store and post office. In 1868, Arthur Ewing Rockhill Sr.'s son, Alfred AikenRockhill, became sole proprietor of the business and continues it to this day. Alfred AikenRockhill also served as mayor from 1911 to 1917 and from 1923 to 1931; he was again elected mayor in 1951. In 1967, Alfred AikenRockhill's wife Virginia died; he continued running the store until his death two years later. He had four children:Virginia (1913-1984), John F.(1915-1988), Alice Hunter(1921-2005) and Wesley Stone(1925-2007). In 1984, Alice Hunter married Edwin Morse III; they had three children: Edwin Morse IV (born 1984), Anna Kapp Morse (born 1988) and Matthew Morse (born 1991). Their daughter Anna Kapp Morse has since become an artist based in New York City. On November 6th 1944 during World War II Major General Daniel Boone Shepherd led American forces into battle against Japanese forces at Beignets Ridge near present day Greenville with orders not to withdraw because there were still enemy troops unaccounted for or captured nearby! After leading his unit up steep hills overlooking what is now Beignets Ridge today’s rock hill cemetery stands proud today telling future generations about this amazing event that took place during World War II! Today many people come here each year on Veterans Day just to pay their respects to these brave men who fought so hard for our country!

Rock Hill is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by white settlers in 1838 and named for General Robert E. Lee's home county of Virginia. Rock Hill grew rapidly during the antebellum period as a cotton plantation center and later became an agricultural town with plantations, barns, churches, schools and factories. The post office was established in 1847 and remains in operation today. During World War II, Rock Hill served as the site of several Air Force bases including Hickory Field (1942–1945), Fort Bragg (1945–1950) and Love Field (1951). In 1949, Rock Hill became one of the first towns in South Carolina to be incorporated as a municipality. On July 1, 1957, it merged with nearby Greenville to become one of the fastest-growing municipalities in South Carolina history. In recent years Rock Hill has experienced growth in its manufacturing sector as a result of new manufacturing businesses moving into the area from other parts of South Carolina or Georgia. These businesses have included two major textile plants that closed after 30 years; Pinnacle Mills(1994) and Gillett & Myers(2002). Other businesses that have moved into this area include Kmart(1999), Bed Bath & Beyond(2005), Sears Holdings(1995) and JCPenney(2006).
Rock Hill was founded in 1777 by white South Carolina planter James Robertson and his Cherokee Indian wife. The town became a center of trade, music, and education after the British burned Charleston in 1780. In 1814, the United States acquired South Carolina from Spain as part of the Treaty of Ghent. As part of the state’s admission into the Union, Rock Hill became one of the first towns in South Carolina to be governed by an elected government. The town grew rapidly during the antebellum period, due to its location at a strategic crossroads and its access to water resources. By 1860, Rock Hill had a population of over 1,000 people and was home to several businesses such as a cotton gin, bank, and post office. The Civil War led to increased violence in Rock Hill; however, it continued to grow until 1865 when it reached its peak population of 2,500 people. After Reconstruction ended in 1869, African Americans began moving into Rock Hill en masse; this led to increasing poverty and social unrest throughout the 1870s and 1880s. In 1925 – following World War II – Rock Hill developed into one of South Carolina’s largest cities with a population exceeding 10,000 people. The city has since declined in popularity but retains some cultural significance including an annual Negro American Festival which takes place in downtown on September 16th each year
