The town of Rock Hill was founded in 1775 by Captain John Dunbar and his wife, Margaret. The first permanent settler in the area was Simon Johnson, who built a cabin on the present day site of the town in 1776. After a few years, other settlers arrived, and by 1779 there were 10 residents living in Rock Hill. In 1780, General James Marion burned down the courthouse in Rocky Hill after trying to arrest some local patriots. The incident led to increased tension between colonists and British troops. In response, Colonel John Poindexter ordered all male militia members to arms and march to Rocky Hill to demand an apology from General Marion. When they didn't show up, Poindexter threatened them with military force if they did not leave. Rocky Hill remained unoccupied until 1814 when Colonel Andrew Pickens took over command of South Carolina's volunteer component during the War of 1812. He decided that Rocky Hill should become his headquarters because it had good soil for agriculture and strategic position on the Savannah River near Savannah. Pickens' administration saw rapid growth within Rock Hill; he added new buildings and renamed the town "Pickensville". In 1824, he hired Pierre-Simon La Salle as governor of Louisiana Territory; La Salle's visit catalyzed a significant increase in trade through Rock Hill into Louisiana Territory which made it one of its few commercial centres east of the Mississippi River during this time period
