Port Royal is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 9,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The earliest human habitation in what is now Port Royal was by the Creek Indians, who lived there until 1775 when British settlers arrived and started to build Fort Nassau on the site of present-day Charleston. In 1797, American Revolutionary War General Nathanael Greene established a small fort here which later became known as West Point after Ulysses S. Grant's military academy at nearby Savannah, Georgia (now Savannah State University). On April 12, 1805—four days after Captain John Smith's first discovery of Cape Fear River—a force of 113 men under Lieutenant Colonel James Johnston attacked and destroyed Fort Nassau with shots from a cannonball gun; this event marked the beginning of English control over this area and its future as an integral part of South Carolina. In 1807–1808 Commodore Alexander Macon sailed upriver from Beaufort to establish a new mercantile harbor at Port Royal Bay on Hilton Head Island; during his stay he built two forts: one called "Fort Moultrie" on Hilton Head Island and another called "Folly" near present-day Mount Pleasant. He also donated land to the town for public use. After Macon's departure in 1810, commercial development stagnated until Danish slave trader Peder Olsen founded a whaling station at Isle Royale in 1816; this port served as the main supply depot for Andrew Johnson's ill-fated war against Confederate forces ashore on Sumter that year.
