Meanwhile, Fort Moultrie (later renamed Fort Pickens) continued being used as an artillery battery until 1829 when it was transferred to Charleston Harbor along with several other batteries in order to reduce Confederate naval attacks on Charleston Harbor during the American Civil War (1861-1865). John Davidson died in 1827 and his ranch passed into hands subsequent year when his son Trusty married Davidson's daughter - making him one of only two men everto hold both simultaneously held positions within state government at different points throughout their lives!
