Port Royal is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It was founded by English colonists in 1736 and named for Sir Walter Raleigh. The town became part of the United States in 1820. The first permanent settler in what is now Port Royal was John Swanton, who arrived on land grant from the Lords Proprietors of Carolina in 1736. He built a log cabin on Roanoke Island and called his settlement "Port Royal." In 1739, Swanton marriedElizabeth Beal and they moved to Port Royal Plantation where they raised cattle and hogs. Elizabeth died in1750, but John continued to live at Port Royal until his death in 1775. While en route back from his final visit to North America on HMS Resolution (1755), Cook's vessel ran into shoals of Spanish galleons off Cape Hatteras near present day Beaufort City on South Carolina's Outer Banks peninsula. On July 26th – 28th of that year he sighted two large vessels with sails furled but no masthead or yards visible; he judged them to be small buoys or "jetties" lying at anchor about three miles distant from one another about five miles square; their course seemed bent towards him [the ships] having most likely been sent out by some French squadron which had cruised off Cape Hatteras several days before[.] Upon this discovery Cook despatched His Majesty's Ship Interceptor under Commodore Edward Vernon with orders to pursue and boarded both vessels; after a severe engagement during which thirteen men were killed including Captain Cook himself four were taken prisoners while nine others were wounded…. After all these adventures it appeared that there was nothing within easy range either of our ships or any thing new discovered since we last left Europe…."
