The first checkers were played on this property on November 6th, 1903 with singles games lasting two hours each while doubles games lasted four hours each; it was later renamed “The McKinley Park” after President McKinley himself who attended some of these matches! First lady Alice Paul visited port royal twice during her presidential campaign tours from 1901-1903! Over $5 million worth of gifts were received from American citizens throughout South Carolina due to President McKinley’s visit!

The town was burned down by Union troops in 1865 and its remaining buildings destroyed by fire two years later. Today, Port Royal is a small community located on Hilton Head Island that retains some of its historical attractions such as the fortifications and slave quarters built around 1800s when the town served as a major tobacco port on Hilton Head Sound between Savannah and Charleston.
The first Europeans to arrive in Port Royal were the French in 1619. The British arrived in 1711 and established a trading post here. In 1814, the United States acquired this land from Spain for $3 million. The town was named after General James Wilkinson, who had been instrumental in securing American independence.
