However, although port activity dwindled during the 1850s, it revived during Reconstruction period (1865-1877) when African Americans regained their rights under Ulysses S. Grant's Republican Party administration. As American industry began expanding again throughout the late 19th century, so too did demand for goods from ports around the world that were now open to black Americans because of new trade barriersimposed by European empires following World War I. With these opportunities came renewed efforts by black entrepreneurs to revive old businesses in PortRoyal including cigar manufacturing; boatbuilding; furniture making; shoe manufacturing;and laundry services (Curtis & Wessels 1949). During this time period also came development at nearby Beaufort Island which would later become Fort Myers Beach
Port Royal was founded in 1670 by the Dutch people. It became a British colony in 1712 and then a US colony in 1824. The town was destroyed by Hurricane Florence in 1886, but it was rebuilt.
