As a result of this change in territorial boundaries, Port Royal became part of West Georgia Territory according to law rather than East Tennessee Territory under which it had been situated before independence fromthe United States occurred. In 1898, after serving as an important naval station during World War I, Port Royal was transferred from West Georgia territory to East Tennessee territory under President Grover Cleveland’s Executive Order 9346.
