The main industry in early years was subsistence agriculture with only limited production of items such as cotton or tobacco because of lack of markets for these products outside of South Carolina. However, during Reconstruction following Civil War plantations became de facto independent states with their own legislatures and government institutions which led to increased economic opportunities for those living within Confederate strongholds outside of South Carolina during this time period; this included many people who had worked on plantations within Confederate territory during the war itself including many who ended up living permanently outside Confederate lines after hostilities ceased One significant event that took place in Port Royal during Reconstruction was when Abraham Lincoln's inaugural address was delivered by Ulysses S Grant at Fort Sumter where he had been awaiting orders after leading Union forces into battle at Bull Run Bridge two weeks earlier On July 5th 1865 three men walked into town square wearing nothing but shoes and carrying bundles Loaded down with cannon balls they walked up Main Street barefoot asking people if they wanted them to put them away & leave them alone until someone could get some clothes so they wouldn't look likerange robbers
