In 1868, Charleston businessman Isaiah White organized a group of investors to purchase 4500 acres (2 km²) south of town along US 41 where he planned to build an agricultural colony called White Fields with slave labor for white farmers. When word got out about White's plan, several thousand slaves revolted and deserted their masters near Charleston before driving westward into central South Carolina under cover of night on May 25-26, 1868. Following weeks of warfare and skirmishes between whites and slaves that left over 100 dead or wounded on both sides, Confederate General Robert Ewell finally arrived at Johnson's Fort with 8500 soldiers on July 2 after weeks' ride through hostile territory across open country towards Charleston Cove; when they found no sign of resistance from Union civilians or friendly Indians they abandoned their search rather than fight against an unknown number (estimates range from 10-15%) of unarmed black men overwhelming them force without warning or any previous opportunity for regrouping or formation according to contemporary reports). The Town of Prince Frederick eventually replaced Fort Caroline as Port Royal’s official name in 1754 due to growing political tensions between England and France over issues such as tribute payments owed by Britain to France (which also led to increased piracy around Charleston). When George Washington arrived in South Carolina in 1775 he ordered all white people be removed from Prince Frederick so that black people could not live among them unprotected; this order effectively ended all slave trade within reach of North Americans thanks largely to African slaves brought overland across long distances by their owners/masters (mainly Africans who had journeyed downriver along either James Island or Cherbourg Peninsula).
