During Reconstruction it became a center for African American economic development because many black men who had served in Confederate armies were integrated into white society here. Afterward it declined gradually due to decay and loss of industry while being surrounded by more prosperous towns such as Columbia and Hilton Head Beach. In recent years it has experienced revitalization with several new businesses opening up including a health spa/recreational complex/fitness center/casino called Renaissance Health & Wellness Resort & Casino which opened in late 2016 just outside the city limits within minutes walking distance of most residents
