During World War II, General Dwight D Eisenhower moved troops through South Carolina during Operation Overlord when they landed on Normandy beachhead on June 6th 1944 (D-Day). Many American soldiers were killed or wounded here while fighting for freedom; some are buried near where Camp David now stands (just east of downtown). On July 4th 1945 (Eisenhower's birthday), Port Royal became part of South Carolina again when General Douglas MacArthur announced the end of World War II at Anacostia River Naval Air Station just outside town limits!

Port Royal, South Carolina is a town in McDowell County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. The first permanent English settlement in this area was founded by Capt. John Smith on the present day's site of Port Royal in 1670. It was called New Providence because it lay next to a new fort built by the Spanish expedition under Hernando de Soto shortly after their arrival in America. The new settlers were men of wealth and education who had come overland from England or Ireland and brought with them unusual technology such as firearms and printing presses. They developed an agricultural economy based on raising tobacco and other crops while also developing trade with nearby African countries and Europe. In 1740, following British conquest of North America, General James River Bridge (later renamed Fort McAllister) was built along what is now US-421 north of Port Royal to protect English traders shipping between Savannah and Liverpool from Spanish pirates operating out of Mobile Bay. This location – next to King's Chapel – made Charleston one of America's earliest successful slave ports and enabled its development as a major commercial center during Reconstruction following the American Civil War. The port served as an important staging ground for both Union and Confederate armies during the war; in addition, it also became home to many African Americans who worked in shipbuilding and other trades essential to Southern economy during Reconstruction. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, Charleston lost much of its economic importance but continued to be a popular tourist destination until World War II when its population decreased dramatically due to bombings by Japanese forces during World War II.
