The garrison surrendered after heavy fighting but not before inflicting significant losses on Ewell's forces. This victory marked a turning point in the war forSouth Carolina independence; thereafter, Fort Moultrie became an important Confederate military stronghold. Following the end of World War II, many businesses closed down in South Carolina because of economic decline and competition from neighboring states. However, some businesses have since reopened thanks to new investment and improvements made in technology. Overall, Port Royal has experienced several iterations since its peak during the 18th century but remains an important cultural center for both locals and visitors alike today.
