Port Royal is a town in Beaufort County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 10,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Beaufort County. The first permanent settler in what is now Port Royal was Nicholas Wright in 1736. The town's name may come from the French word "porche" meaning public square or market place and also means harbor on an island. In 1822, Drury built a small brick courthouse and school house on what is now Main Street. In 1829, General James Johnston moved his army to Beaufort Island after losing a battle with American Indian forces at Cowpens Plantation. He established Fort Johnston on the island and named it for himself. In 1835, John Brown organized a slave insurrection against segregation laws which had been put into effect by Governor Francis Pickens of South Carolina. Brown's rebels were successful and they burned most of Fort Pickens before escaping to Canada with some 2,000 slaves under their control. In 1851, when South Carolina seceded from the United States and became an independent country, Port Royal became part of that new country as well as Beaufort County. The first post office was opened in 1865 and remained open until 1971 when it was closed because of lack of mail service to local residents from Charleston; this left Port Royal without its primary commercial center for almost half a century! The first African-American resident of PortRoyal was Julius Leflore who arrived in 1861 from Africa via shipwreck off Cape Fear River in North Carolina aboard the SS Alabama-Leflore A1R2Limited Edition Bottle Ship with over 1,500 passengers including future Ulysses S Grant! A second African-American resident arrived three years later when Harry Bridge came ashore from USS Enterprise (CVN 64) after his white owner abandoned him onshore while he was working as a cook aboard that vessel! On July 11th 1903 President Theodore Roosevelt visited downtown Port Royal during his annual summer vacation only to find one brick wall had been repaired since he last visited seven months earlier! Roosevelt then announced that all construction projects necessary for reconstruction would be funded by private donations instead of state coffers! After several more repairs ensuing through 1903-1904 there were five walls totaling 25 feet high still standing excluding roof supports having collapsed due to weathering but all but one now have replaced by architects' plans original bricks creating an impressive example of adaptive architecture along with learning about civic responsibility leadership during times such as these!

In 1835, its charter as an incorporated town was amended to allow for slave trade and stockade circumscription within its boundaries. The townsfolk successfully resisted this change, and in 1845 the constitution of SC stated that "All persons born or naturalized in this State are citizens thereof." In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee's forces burned down Port Royal after learning about its allegiance.
