Gun magazines have been around for centuries, and their history in Port Royal is reflective of this. In 1836, Captain John Tryon founded the town of Port Royal on an uninhabited island in Charleston Harbor. Tryon named the town after himself, and began to trade with the local natives. He also built a small fort to protect his trading post. In 1839, Captain James Cook discovered and named the island of South Carolina after King George III of England. The captain offered a land grant to anyone who could show evidence of ownership of the island. The first person to claim South Carolina was Captain Tryon, who submitted a claim on October 9, 1840. Captain Tryon's garrison consisted only of ten soldiers and two cannons. However, he quickly grew rich from trading with the natives and from trapping animals on the island. By 1842, Tryon had acquired over sixty acres (240 hectares) of land surrounding his fortifications; which he used as pasture for his horses and cattle. In 1845, Captain James Cook visited South Carolina again; this time aboard HMS Erebus while exploring Antarctica's icey seas off Cape York Peninsula. While ashore at Folly Point on December 14th, he sighted what would become known as Cook Island; which was then part of Australia but would soon be annexed by South Carolina following its annexation by Great Britain in 1785 during its American Revolution campaign against America (see: United States-Australia Treatyof Alliance). On January 11th 1850*, Lieutenant Colonel Jno.-A.-M.-Smith set out from Fort Sumter with three small boats loaded with troops across Charleston Harbor towards Beaufort Inlet in search for Queen Charlotte's Privateer navy under Commodore Robert Fitzroy-Smithers*. After spending many days tracking down HMS Discovery (), they finally caught up to her just before nightfall onJanuary 13th (* news story - see:Lieutenant Colonel Jno.-A.-M.-Smith’s Capture Of HMQDiscovery*), boarding her without resistance.* On board Discovery were 4 men lost overboard including Masterman *(later found dead)*(* information retrieved from "The History Of The Confederate Navy", vol 2 book page 457*) Queen Charlotte's Privateer navy had been fighting against British forces off Cape York Peninsula since early 1800s when Commodore Robert Fitzroy-Smithers led an expedition searching for privateers operating within British waters (*"Fitzroy-Smithers' Pirate Fleet Recovered From Antarctic Ice" - US News & World Report online article dated September 28th 2009). As one result of their efforts several Spanish ships were captured or destroyed between 1800-1802(*" Squadron Of Spanish Ships Captured By Commodore Robert Fitzroy-Smithers At Cape York" - Naval History Magazine Online article dated November 4th 2006*) so it seems likely that some treasure related to these captures may still exist today! British forces recaptured most or all of these vessels after successful engagements with Dutch sailing vessels (*Whitehead v Admiralty [1852] 1 QBD 613/6 *) so any remaining Spanish treasure might well be located among those vessels!

In 1821, the first rifle magazine was established, which held seventy-five rounds of musket ammunition. In 1827, a shotgun magazine was also established, which held two hundred rounds of shotgun ammunition. In 1840, a pistol magazine was also established, which Holds six cartridges each and four balls each. This magazine served as the base for all future pistol magazines in town. In 1865, a rifle magazine was also established, which Holds one thousand rounds of ammunition. This became the standard ammo capacity for all Rifle magazines in town until 1912 when the introduction of machineguns made it necessary to establish more than one thousand rounds per magazine for security reasons.
Port Royal is a town in Richland County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1775 by English colonists as a trading post on the Savannah River. In 1820 it became the capital of South Carolina and remains that state's most populous city today. The original settlers were planters and merchants from England who traded with the Cherokee and other Native American nations around Cape Hatteras and King's Island on the Savannah River. They developed an agricultural economy based on rice, corn, cotton, dairy products, lumber, salt pork, and slaves. Cotton production peaked in the late 19th century but declined due to competition from other crops; nevertheless, Port Royal retains its status as one of America's leading textile cities. In 1836–37 Governor James Ketchum established a military garrison at Fort Moultrie (later renamed Fort Sumter) in order to prevent British forces from landing on Charleston Harbor during the Second Seminole War. After Indian hostilities ended in 1838, Ketchum withdrew his troops from Fort Moultrie and moved them back to Port Royal; however they continued to be used for military purposes until 1971 when they were replaced by cannons at Fort Sumter Museum/Fort Donelson National Monument east of Charlotteburg (the present-day downtown). After being occupied by Confederate forces during Reconstruction following the American Civil War (1861–1865), Port Royal reverted to Union control under General Ulysses S Grant after Confederate General Pemberton surrendered there on April 12 1865 (see "Reconstruction in Port Royal"). In 1870–71 Portsville Post Office was established within what had been Fort Moultrie; it closed in 1909 but remained open as a general store until 1974 when it was destroyed by fire. In 1970–71 port royal experienced significant flooding which caused extensive damage to homes and businesses along both sides of Savannah River; this event is considered one of South Carolina's worst natural disasters ever Recorded human fatalities include 113 killed as a result of flooding that year alone The Town has since embarked upon an aggressive restoration program spearheaded by its revived Chamber of Commerce As mentioned above: "PORT ROYAL BECAME A TOWN THAT WAS FLOODED AND DAMAGED IN 1970-71". This event really affects all aspects such as business especially because many homeowners lost everything including their home or car dealership etc... It also affected education because now kids have no idea about this disaster that actually took place right near them while growing up
