In 1837, Port Royal was founded as a small town on the African slave trade route between Charleston and Savannah. The town’s first gunsmith, John Blythe, started making firearms in 1839. By 1845, Blythe had become the largest firearms manufacturer in the state of South Carolina. In 1850, Confederate forces burned down Blythe’s factory and all his equipment in what is now known as the Battle of Port Royal. However, this event did not stop Port Royal from becoming one of the most important slave-based ports in United States history. The early guns made by John Blythe played an important role in helping to defend against British attacks on Charleston during the Revolutionary War. After Charleston fell to British forces in 1776, many of these guns were used by local civilians to help protect their homes and businesses from future attack. In addition to its military use, Port Royal also became a center for smuggling slaves into and out of Africa. Port Royal is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 3,527 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Spartanburg County and the seat of its political district. The town was founded in 1733 by Hugh Pulaski and named after his father-in-law, King William III of England. The first white settler in Port Royal was John White who arrived in 1734 with some other Englishmen on HMS "Adventure". He traded goods with the Native Americans and built a small cabin near the present day downtown area. In 1736 Isaac McCoy set up a store here and began to trade goods with Indian tribes around the area. In 1738 John White's son James White established a ferry crossing on what is now known as Broad Street between Port Royal Creek and Spanish Fort Creek to trade with Native Americans for goods such as cloth, tobacco, maize, cattle, horses and hunting dogs. This early port allowed travelers access to many markets far from their homes. By 1800 there were over 100 white settlers living in Port Royaltown - almost all farmers or traders engaged in commerce or agriculture. By 1810 only 20% of the residents were white; most residents were African American slaves or free blacks working alongside their white owners or tenants. The town experienced rapid growth during Reconstruction following America's Civil War (1861–1865). With new transportation connections made available by railroads, industries developed such as cotton ginning and shoe manufacturing which attracted more workers to town than could be accommodated within traditional farms/villages. Portsmouth Landing opened up farther upstream along Broad Street providing increased access for shipping traffic into Charleston Harbor making it easier for merchants to provide essential items like flour, saltpetre (a type of sulfur) and clothing to southern black marketeers while avoiding smuggled goods from Cuba which would have resulted in severe punishment if discovered by U.S authorities ship captains operating out of Charleston Harbor without clearance from higher ups ashore
