Port Royal is an historic town located in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The population was 9,876 at the 2010 census. It is situated on the Savannah River, about 20 miles (30 km) north of Columbia and 40 miles (64 km) south of Charleston. The town was founded by English colonists in 1735 as a landing point for goods coming down the Savannah River from Georgia and the Carolinas. In 1824, it became a stop on the Underground Railroad. The town was first settled by white men in 1735 as part of a land grant to Colonel James Cook from King George III. Cook's group of settlers built their homes on highgrounds overlooking the river near present-day Port Royal Ferry Landing. They called their community "Grantham," after General John Grantham who had served with British forces during the American Revolution and helped lead the patriots to success against Washington's forces at Yorktown. A store and post office were established in 1736, but soon declined because of difficulties getting supplies upriver to them from farther away. Nevertheless, they continued to grow until around 1800 when malaria began spreading through Africa and Europeans started moving out of Africa for health reasons rather than stay there long term; this led to a decrease in trade along the Savannah River between Britain and America due to competition among British traders for access to new markets on both sides of the ocean. In 1824, Captain David Dixon decided that Port Royal would be his new headquarters for Confederate forces fighting against United States troops during the American Civil War because it offered protection from Union artillery fire across the river - something that could not be done elsewhere close enough to support operations ashore or afloat. Dixon named his new settlement "Port Royal" after Queen Anne's Bay in England where he had been based while commanding Confederate forces there before returning home sick with measles en route back home across America aboard HMS Rattlesnake late in 1862.. After General Robert Ewell's raid into South Carolina earlier that year resulted in much damage being done within Port Royal itself as well as throughout its vicinity including captured munitions stores belonging to Ulysses S Grant's army stationed nearby at Millenia plantation west of town – all this activity hastened port authorities' desireforthto establish control over key shipping points along both banks ofthe SavannahRiver so that they too might defend themselves from any future such raids or assaults should such an event occur again; but these efforts proved fruitless given Ewell's continuing rebellion within Confederate ranks leading up until his death early summer 1865 – thus effectively ending any hope for control over those areas within South Carolina by either side following what had come to be known as one Of The Great Southern Rebellions). This lacklustre effort notwithstanding, some progress was made towards reestablishing order within port authorities' jurisdiction within less than two years following Dixon's arrival which saw establishment of courtrooms within existing buildings including one used previously by military surgeons assisting Ulysses S Grant during his 1863–1865 campaign against Rebel slave holders east of Charleston – acts which may have finally led directly theretofore largely hands off attitude amongst many officials towards African Americans living therein even though prior discriminatory practices still persisted albeit often under more covert means’(Beattie 1987: 190).
