Port Royal is a town in Sumter County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,493 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sumter County. The town was founded by English colonists in 1714 as a small trading post on the Savannah River and became an important transportation and commercial center during the antebellum period. The first white settlers arrived in 1714 when Captain John Smith sailed from England on his mission to discover new lands in North America. He landed at what is now Port Royal on December 3, 1714, and named it after his home town of Ratcliffe Hall near Windsor, England. On March 10, 1715, Governor James Iredale issued a royal proclamation called "An Act for erecting a Fort at Port Royal" which authorized two hundred Scotsmen to build Fort Augusta at present-day downtown Port Royal. In early June of that year, two British warships were patrolling off the coast of Charleston when they sighted two small boats filled with men trying to reach Hilton Head Island opposite Charleston Harbor. One ship boarded each boat and took them prisoners; their supplies and equipment were confiscated and used to build Fort Augusta. Captain James Cook visited Charleston in October 1718 while on his fourth voyage around Cape Horn and noticed that Hilton Head had been abandoned; he decided to establish a permanent European presence in South Carolina instead of returning home without exploring further into this rich colony ruled by Great Britain. On February 15, 1719 – one day after George Washington's inauguration as First President of the United States – Captains John Forster (of HMS Providence) and Richard Grenville (of HMS Euryalus) sailed upriver from Savannah for Port Royal with orders to take possession of all Native American land east of Cape Fear River within five miles (8 km) of present-day downtown PortRoyal.*fn1 They discovered only scattered villages*fn2 along riverbanks*fn3 until they reached what is now Georgetown *fn4 about seven miles upstream from where today's downtown sits*fn5 As they neared Georgetown they originated reports that there was gold hidden among these rocks.*fn6 So Grenville ordered his whole squadron ashore (*the first Europeans ever landing on American soil*) August 25th*,7 expecting discoveries worthy Of Admiralty warrants†† but found nothing but barren sand beaches††nor any sign whatsoever Of Gold or Mines!‡‡ Despite this failure*, Grenville continued ashore*: “being very sensible how improbable it would be for us should we find any thing worth stocking With Money hereabouts we concluded upon returning safe without alarming our Friends who probably lay behind us asleep secure In their Stores”(*This account differs from other sources which credit grenville with finding $10 000 worth ofGold jewelry here)*† Aftermath: Georgetown became known as "Grenville's Beach" because so much treasure was lost during those failed exploration efforts
Port Royal was the capital of Carolina in the 17th century. The town was founded on an island inlets of Charleston Harbor, and grew rapidly because of its natural resources and its strategic location. In 1699, English colonists built Fort George at Port Royal to protect their monopoly on trade with Africa. Spanish forces attacked the fort in 1701, but were repulsed. English settlers moved into the town and began developing it as a commercial center. In 1722, Governor John Watts renamed the town for Prince Charles Edward Stuart, Duke of York (later King George III), who had helped lead England to victory over Spain at Culloden Moor. In 1836, when Confederate forces occupied South Carolina, Port Royal became the capital of a new state calledUnionist South Carolina. It remained this role until Union troops burned it in 1865 after sided with the Confederacy during the American Civil War.
