Port Royal, South Carolina is a town in Charleston County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 12,095 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Charleston County. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Port Royal was by French traders from Acadia (now Nova Scotia) in 1629. The English founded this town on December 13, 1768 as part of a larger effort to secure control of the salt trade between North America and Europe. At its peak it had a population of over 30,000 people. In 1814–1815 an army led by Major General Andrew Jackson fought against invading Mexican forces at this town and other nearby Naval Battle of Cape Hatteras which resulted in heavy losses for both sides. In 1827-28 Union troops burned down most of the old white courthouse while occupiers were retreating after an unsuccessful assault on Fort Moultrie manned by British troops commanded byMajor-General David Hunter (founder of Beaufort). As a result, many local citizens fled to neighboring Savannah or Wilmington where they still live today. In 1846-47 Confederate soldiers burned down much of the town during their retreat from Appomattox Court House following their failed attempt to overthrow Ulysses S Grant as commander in chief during the American Civil War; however little damage was done to either building due to lack of fuel. A post office called "Port Royal" was established in 1768 and remained operational until 1907.; In that year it became part of Greenville County when Charleston County was created from parts of Georgetown and Richland counties). A new courthouse was built in 1903–1904 and remains standing today as one component of the historic downtown district that also includes several churches including Saint John’s Episcopal Church (founded November 3rd, 1785), First Baptist Church (1824), and Presbyterian church (1898). After years filled with growth but consistent struggles with funding shortages, Port Royal experienced its golden era beginning around 2000 when developers began redeveloping some sections into high-rise condominiums/apartments called “The Harbor Towers”; however, recent economic setbacks have forced many residents out onto THE WATERFRONT again leading to concerns about gentrification affecting long term stability & characteristics that have made PortRoyal one OF AMERICA's most endangered communities
