Brown's Storehouse is significant for its association with early African Americanowned businesses in south central SC and also for its architecture which reflects freedmen's educational aspirations during that era. In 1865, General Robert Ewell decided to move his forces against Confederate General Pemberton northward along the Appomattox River valley instead of defending Port Royal Bay against possible Union attack; this decision resulted in severe losses for Ewell's troops at Battle of Petersburg (1865).
