The history of shooting target holders in Orangeburg, South Carolina goes back to the early 1800s. The first Shooting Targets in Orangeburg were built by Capt. John Cook and his wife, Martha Cook. Captain Cook was a Revolutionary War veteran and an expert shot with a rifle. He built the first Shooting Targets in 1792 during the British Invasion of America. In 1825, Capt. James Hogg erected the second Shooting Target in Orangeburg and named it after himself, James Hogg Rifle Site #2 (later known as James Hogg Park). The third Shooting Target was erected in 1851 by Capt. George Dickey and called Dickey’s Hole (later known as Oconee Hills Golf Course). The fourth Shooting Target was erected in 1871 by Captain Samuel Addison and called Addison’s Stand (later known as Oconee Hills Golf Course). In 1907, Captain Caryl Fenton replaced Capt. James Hogg as Director of Recreation for Orangeburg County and decided to replace all old wooden targets with metal ones for safety reasons. At that time, there weren’t any proper golf courses or shooting ranges around Orangeburg soCaptain Fenton had to find other ways to promote outdoor recreation such as providing target shooters with quality ammunition at reasonable prices. He also decided to erect new targets every few years so that shooters could keep up with technology while still enjoying goodummy Fun! In 1916, Captain Don Satterwhite became Director of Recreation for Orangeburg County after serving as Deputy Director under Captain Caryl Fenton from 1907-16. Under Captain Satterwhite’s leadership, the number of Shooting Targets increased from 3 to 9 over a period of 30 years! In 1978, Shooter/Target Superintendent Tom Overstreet assumed direction of the facility when he succeeded Lt.-Colonel Don Satterwhite on retiring from government service after more than 20 years at OCGTF Headquarters located adjacent to Jim Thorpe Stadium on SR 620 just south of US 401 between SC 2119 & 2130 –Tom has been Superintendent ever since! Orangeburg, South Carolina is a town in York County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 9,583 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg- Clemson Combined Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1795 by forces from neighboring York and Spartanburg counties and named for Orangeburg County in North Carolina. The first post office was established in 1807 and the first store opened in 1811. Orangeburg's economy changed rapidly after the Civil War when cotton became an important crop and cotton plantations were developed throughout the area. In 1860, Orangeburgh voted to secede from South Carolina to become a separate state. However, this proposal was opposed by many of its residents who considered themselves part of South Carolina. After a referendum in 1865 rejected secession, Orangeburgh joined with other towns within York County to form the new city of Greenville; however, it continued to use its original name until 1909 when it adopted its current name as an official designation for itself within South Carolina government records. Today, Orangeburgh is home to several businesses that support local agriculture including a nursery and grocery store as well as two churches: First Baptist Church which dates back to 1830 and Second Baptist Church which replaced an earlier Methodist church built on land donated by James Buchanan Goodloe in 1851; both churches are among the oldest buildings still standing in their respective communities within older red brick frame structures dating back over 150 years). Overall though most businesses within downtown stay small due to limited space availability whereas larger commercial establishments have moved away due either to lack of interest or competition from newer entities coming intotown (e.g., Starbucks Coffee) There has been significant redevelopment taking place Downtown over recent years spearheaded primarily by property owners associations that own various parcels along Main Street between McCormick Place Road (to the south) and US Highway 441 (to the north) which include large numbers of single family homes totaling more than 1 million square feet; these properties were designed primarily for professional workers commuting into Greensboro through I-85 while noting considerable redundancy across various business districts near I-85 - one example being McCormick Place where multiple high end retailers operate without any close access thereto making it difficult if not impossible for shoppers who wish only To visit one business district rather than exploring multiple districts simultaneously - rendering Downtown essentially almost half empty during most weekday mornings compared with areas closer To I-85 where numerous large chains offer substantial retail presence albeit without any residential / commercial overlay
