Orangeburg is home to Clemson University and the Orangeburgh High School Bulldogs football team. The town's name comes from the orange-colored bricks used in its construction. The first mention of Orangeburg was in 1739 when it was part of Plantation John Brownsborough. In 1814, a group of English settlers named Orangeburgh after General James Ligonier who had fought for independence from England during the American Revolution. The early residents were farmers and their families built log homes on what is now Main Street in Orangeburg Township which they called "the plantation." In 1828, Colonel Jno. Horry bought land around present day campus of Clemson University and laid out streets that would serve as the townsite for Clemson students and faculty living on his plantations scattered throughout Richland County. After years of growth and development by Colonel Horry’s descendants, including Drayton Waddell (founder of Waddell Seed Co.), many other landowners followed suit with plantations within or adjacent to Orangeburg township reaching as far away as Kershaw County by 1895. By 1907 there were over 100 businesses located in downtown orangeburg with an agricultural processing complex consisting of a large barn, two feed mills and seven sheds housing several hundred hogs per acre! At this time citrus production was becoming increasingly important due to increased demand for fruit by consumers in North America and Europe; however small scale processing remained until World War II when larger plants were started up all across South Carolina). In 1915 an act was passed legalizing slave trading within Confederate lines so that white men could purchase slaves brought into the Union through Union ports such as Wilmington) but no black people lived in or near Orangeburgh until after World War II when some Uptown business owners decided to integrate their Negro employees into white society before southern whites began integrating automobiles into their daily lives
