Orangeburg is a town in York County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. Orangeburg is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg–Anderson metropolitan area. The first Europeans to set foot in what is now Orangeburg were Dutch traders working the coast of Cape Hatteras in 1616-17. The first Englishman to visit the area was Captain John Smith in 1733 and he named it "Anegada." A slave trading post called "British Plantation" was established by General James Oglethorpe in 1749 on land that stands today near present-day downtown Orangeburg. In 1807, a group of farmers led by Colonel Robert Ewell organized a town called Liberty which later merged with Orangeburg. In 1827, President Andrew Johnson ordered Confederate General Jubal Early to march through York County on his way to attack Wilmington and Columbia River ports. Early's forces reached Orangeburg on July 9 and destroyed most of the local militia before reaching Libertytown where they stopped for lunch. The next day they continued their march but arrived too late at Wilmington where they were joined by Union troops under General Pemberton who drove them back into North Carolina without achieving their objectives. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell's army invaded South Carolina from northward along the Atlantic seaboard and briefly occupied Orangeburg before withdrawing southward towards Myrtle Beach. For much of this period, sections of Orangeburg lay within Union lines until Confederate general Joseph Johnston's force crossed over safely into Union territory near Morehead City on December 12th 1863; shortly thereafter allOrangeburgh residents became Union citizens subject to military draft if required for military service or duty in the Confederacy under any circumstances other than personal services outside home country only as provided for by state law (and with no right to vote or property ownership). In 1896 Orangesburgh had an estimated population of 1,500 people when it lost its main courthouse due to fire; however following several years efforts including fundraising campaigns and contributions from boosters such as C O R G E N D I T I O N , after passage of an act authorizing appropriations for emergency expenses associated with construction there ensued an extensive rebuild which accomplished many original goals including re-opening both courthouses on nearby Market Street as well as creating new parklands adjacent thereto.. In 2006 Orangesburgh achieved “ distinctions” from both SC Magazine’s Best Places To Live issue (#2)and SC Business magazine’s 5 Star Award – being one notch up from #1! This accolade came about because during its celebration week – October 15 thru 23rd 2006 - city officials hosted more than 350 guests at various events throughout downtown which included restoration/ rehabilitation works on city hall…..the mix includes art galleries (5), restaurants (25), nightlife (10), cultural attractions (5), convention center/sports arena (3)….the result: A vibrant arts district complete with world class galleries & theaters…..this success story began LONG BEFORE ORANGEBURG WAS CALLED THE SOURCE OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S FESTIVAL CENTER!

Orangeburg is a town in Richland County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 9,872 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1824 by General James Wilkinson and is named for Orangeburg County in Virginia. It is one of the oldest towns in South Carolina. The first residents of Orangeburg were white men who came to the area from nearby Savannah after the American Revolution. They began to populate the area early on and started trading with other villages along the Savannah River. In 1795, a group of English settlers arrived and founded what became Orangeburg. By 1800, orange trees had become popular because they yielded a high price for their fruit when compared to other vegetables or fruits grown in that time period. In 1824, General James Wilkinson settled here with his wife and children after fleeing England during the Napoleonic Wars. He envisioned this as an agricultural community where he would be able to sell his crops and raise money to finance his military campaigns against Napoleon Bonaparte. Wilkinson's dream came true and Orangeburg grew quickly into a thriving town thanks to its natural resources such as timber, cotton, cattle, rice, potatoes and tobacco products being some of its primary exports throughout the 19th century. One of Orangeburg's most famous residents was Troup County native John Tyler who served as Vice President of the United States (1801-1809) before becoming president in 1825 under Jacksonian rule following Ulysses S Grant's election victory over Tyler's opponent Andrew Johnson.. During Tyler's presidency there were several natural disasters including Arakanese malaria outbreaks that killed more than 100 people; yellow fever pandemic which claimed dozens of lives; Creek Indian raids which destroyed many homes; and Charleston Harbor Blockade - an unsuccessful attempt by Confederate forces to stop Union ships from reaching Charleston harbor duringthe American Civil War). After years of growth stability followed by numerous social changes (such as prohibitionist laws passed during prohibitionist governor Asa Hutchinson’s administration), economic development took hold beginning around 1930 with major timber companies moving into the area such as Waddell & Caldwell Paper Company (founded by Waddell family member Lewis Caldwell) along with large textile mills such as International Harvester Corporation(founded by Abram Hewitt Hawley) which soon outgrew its original site on Courthouse Square downtown while also creating thousands of jobs across much rural southernSouth Carolina simply through productivity gains associated with new technologies related to mechanization like air conditioning etc.; Comprehensive Plan adopted ordinance establishing zoning regulations specific erection densities permitted within various designated areas; These types of technological advances led to increased housing production – no small accomplishment considering that up until then all homebuilding had been done manually using traditional hand tools–resulting not only in increased demand for housing but builder quality control issues leading ultimatelyto greater house prices relativeto earlier periods
