The first white settler in Orangeburg was John Brown who arrived in 1820. In 1828, Captain John Peebles established a ferry service from Mobile to Augusta which transported goods and passengers between Orangeburg and Savannah. In 1860, after Confederate General Robert Ewell's surrender at Appomattox Court House, most of South Carolina seceded from the Union and became Confederate States of America. This action resulted in many White Southerners moving to what is now Orangeburg due to economic opportunities available there under the new Confederacy regime. A post office called "Orangeburgh" was established in 1827, and remained open until 1903. The present day Village of Orangeburgh was platted in 1865 by Jno Crain as part of a realignment of local government that followed county secession from Federal rule; it replaced an earlier village named "Belmont". Orangeburgh has one school: Booker T Washington High School which opened its doors on September 1st 1961

Orangeburg is one of the most financially prosperous towns in South Carolina. The economy revolves around manufacturing and agriculture. The first white people to live in Orangeburg were two families who came from Scotland in 1819. They named their settlement after a small orange tree they saw while on their way to trade with the Cherokee Indians. In 1830, John Wilkinson donated land to build a church and school in Orangeburg; both structures still stand today. The town was chartered on May 8, 1835 by commissioners from Augusta and Charleston as part of an effort to promote agricultural development in Richland County. One of the early industries for Orangeburg was raising hogs for marketability as pork products were not yet popular among Americans at that time. One such hog farmer was James Fenton who built up a large business between 1840-1870 selling pork and bacon door-to-door throughoutRichlandCountyand surrounding countiesDupree., Laurens., Aiken., Androscoggin., and Yorktown.. In 1850, Fenton set up his own transportation company which transported goods across county lines by wagon or horseback. In 1865, President Andrew Johnson recommended that Richland be divided into three parts based on its wealth: areas centrally located like Augusta would be given away to other central locations while those near the coast would be split between Newport News and Norfolk Beach (Norfolk). This recommendation led to what is now known as "The Great Migration" where many farmers left rural South Carolina for better economic opportunities in North America during the late 19th century.. In 1870–71 when cotton prices began high enough again (#14/buying power parity), wealthy citizens decided that they should move back into their homesickness-ridden childhoods rather than risk losing their holdings if prices continued falling because there wasn't any money available for new construction or improvements elsewhere.. So instead of rebuilding themselves wherever they had been before (probably including some moves back into rural areas), these people purchased more acreage south of downtown so they could continue producing crops even at lower levels of productivity due to improved transportation infrastructure brought about by railroads!. Most importantly though, these people hired engineers who designed canals and reservoirs needed for supporting this increased production so there would never again be a need for reliance on waterways resources! This pattern continued through much of the 20th century with municipalities increasingly wanting control over rivers or within limits set by developers seeking access to valuable water supplies – something we take for granted today without realizing it! There have been occasional scares however about whether this trend will continue uninterrupted – but overall it seems like things are going pretty much according to plan!
