However, as handgun popularity increased throughout America, so too did the demand for new and improved shooting devices. As a result, Patton began production of his own firearm swivels in 1814. By this time, his company had become well-known across America and its products were respected by both consumers and sellers alike. Soon after turning manufacturing operations over to his son Willard in 1818, James H. Patton died without leaving any children behind to continue his father's business venture. This left the future of the Patton Place armory - which still stands today - up in question. However, an effort led by local militia member Major John Witherspoon successfully purchasing the property from the family in 1865 proved that it would not be abandoned ever again! Ever since then, the armory has been used as a storage facility for various items related to military firearms culture and history (e.g., cannons) as well as occasional events/programs related thereto!

James died here while planting tobacco and his colony failed; however, another group led by Governor Hugh Lawson succeeded him and started a new settlement there in 1845 which grew into what is now Orangeburg proper. The original settlers were farmers who bought land from the Indian chief Powhatan for $5 per acre (about $). They began to build homes, churches, schools and stores around what is now downtown Orangeburg soon after they arrived. The town sprang up quickly because people could still get good wages for doing manual labor during the antebellum period despite advances in transportation which made farming more difficult and expensive to doremotely or even partially out of stateand especially within South Carolina itself From 1865 until after 1890 most white people lived outside of town while black people continued to live inside the white community until they were expelled when black people began voting en masse throughout all southern states beginning with Reconstruction . By 1870 most blacks had been expelled or moved away leaving only a few hundred African Americans remaining residing mainly along I-95 corridor between Clemson University eastward to points northward includingOrangeburgh Thereafter rapid growth ensued primarily duewhite commercial enterprise: mercantile/agricultural enterprises such as merchants’ storehouses; service businesses such as restaurants; hotels; bars/lounges; cotton ginners’ workshops having replaced slave quarters . Negro residents increasingly worked outside their home communities for jobs not available either inside or outside their segregated neighborhoods
