Orangeburg is a town in Lowndes County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1786 by James Orange and his brother John Orange as a small community on a peninsula in the lower Chattahoochee River. The first post office was established in 1800. In 1814, the name was changed to Orangeburg after James Orange's father, Elias Orange, who had been born in England and had come to America to become a planter and then an explorer. In 1851, the town became one of two towns incorporated within Lowndes County; it remained so until 1932 when it became part of neighboring Alpharetta Township. The first courthouse was built in 1816 on land donated by Elias Orange and it served as the seat of government for both towns until 1830 when they were consolidated into one county government under Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest Jr.. The courthouse burned down in 1831 but was rebuilt with help from donations from members of the local Baptist church. The town also built its own jail which served until 1898; at that time it opened up shop for other law enforcement agencies within Lowndes County instead. In 1902-1903, Orangesville (later renamed Gravesend) emerged as a major shopping center located near what is now Interstate 95 south of downtown Atlanta; trade goods brought overland via dirt roads helped spur development there during this time period In 1941-1942 World War II moved orange production from Europe to Georgia; workers choice between labor or service caused prices to plummet at factories across America In 1952-1953 successor governments formed within Lowndes County following statehood including centralized planning that led to increased funds for schools and social services After years of decline beginning around 1980s blighted areas such as Wetumpka began gentrifying while jobs lost due to computer automation ; however some people continue to call orange "the great American fruit"
