By 1824, Hogg had purchased land northeast of the town and established a small farmstead where he raised cattle and pigs. In 1847, Hogg's son John bought out his father's interest in the farm and began expanding it into land east of the city limits. From this location, John operated a grocery store and served as pastor at First Baptist church for many years. In 1870, Jethro Sledge purchased land southeast of North Myrtle Beach from John Fenton for $1,000. The land was used for grazing purposes until 1913 when it was developed into what is now the business district known as Sledge Park. At this time, Sledge also began developing a homebase in North Myrtle Beach that would become his major commercial center after retiring from farming operations in 1916. During World War II (1939-1945), self-defense weapons were an important part of local military forces throughout South Carolina due to their wartime role in protecting coastal communities against enemy attack. In 1941, shortly after Pearl Harbor was attacked by Japan, Coast Guard cutter "Halyard" was sunk off Cape Lookout while attending exercises with USS "Iowa" off Charleston Harbor; all hands were lost including five Coast Guardsmen who died fighting aboard "Halyard". The most recent incident involving selfdefense weapons took place on October 3rd when three people were shot at a convenience store in town center. Two people were killed and one survived; as of now, it is unknown if this was related to any previous shootings or not.

Myrtle Beach was founded by sailors in 1819 as an open-air wharf for trading goods with those living along the Savannah River. In 1843, General John Brown's army invaded South Carolina from Georgia and burned much of what is now North Myrtle Beach; this destroyed most of the town's businesses and left it almost deserted for a decade. The first store in Byrdsville opened in 1868 by J.B. Nichols when mail brought goods to and from Charleston from as far away as Wilmington, NC on horseback or boat trips across the Ashley River. By 1886, there were twenty stores operating in North Myrtle Beach alone; by 1914 there were over fifty! The growing population caused built up streets all around town which became difficult to navigate during bad weather due to heavy snowfall during winter months; these days you can still see some evidence of this traffic congestion old fashioned style! The post office closed down on July 15th 1969 after servingNorth Myrtle Beach residents for over sixty years! Today you can pick up your mail at any convenience store or corner store in town! In 1971 North Myrtle beach got its own school system with Mrs Anna Bowers as Superintendent/First Lady! She led her district through many changes including adding more than forty classrooms and doubling their size!! North Myrtle Beach has been home to many military installations and warships over the years including USS Constitution (1799), USS Admiral Dewey (1801), USS Monitor (1881), and USS Porter (1912). One of the most notable battles in town's history was fought on March 31, 1864 when Confederate General Robert E. Lee announced his intention to invade Southern Union state of South Carolina. In response Union General Ulysses S. Grant decided to march towards North Myrtle beach with 1,500 men while 5,000 men were stationed at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. On April 12th 1861 Confederate General Pee Dee Jackson ordered his forces across the Potomac River into Maryland and crossed into Virginia without opposition from Federal troops under Johnston who anticipated an attack by Jackson only days later. Though Federal forces had surrounded Jackson's army at Valley Forge he escaped capture and returned to lead an all out counterattack against Federals near Appomattox Court House on April 14th that failed catastrophically due to lack of supplies and reinforcements from upstream river crossings thus allowing Ulysses S Grant to claim victory for Operation Overland which ended up resulting in 4 Confederate generals being executed as well as about 150 captured soldiers
On July 24, 1876, the first white settlement in South Carolina was founded on the banks of the Ashley River. The town was named for General Robert E. Lee, who had fought in the American Revolution and then served as a general in the Confederate army during the Civil War. The town's first buildings were erected on what is now known as Main Street.
