North Myrtle Beach is a city in south central South Carolina, United States. The population was 34,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Beaufort County and part of the North Carolina metropolitan area. The town was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1793 and named for Governor James Stewart, 2nd Earl of Dunmore, who had landed on the coast to purchase land from the Cherokee. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson's army burned down the courthouse and other buildings in town after raids by guerrilla warriors led by Colonel John Custer. In 1864, Confederate General Robert Ewell arrived in town with 10,000 men to attack Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant near Fort Fisher. Ewell's forces were repulsed and he retreated back into Georgia before finally surrendering at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. After World War II ended, North Myrtle Beach became a popular tourist destination due to its secluded beaches and white sand seaside communities such as Clearwater Beach and Surfside Heights. After years of economic decline starting in the late 1990s, increased development around Interstate 95 (I-95) caused significant erosion of beachfront properties along its route through town; a process that began during Hurricane Katrina when rubbish piling up along I-95 created an estimated $50 million worth of damage to both property values and beach front businesses over several weeks). On Aug. 1, 2018, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it would be allowing expanded scope mounts for firearms on pistols with a barrel length of 6 inches or less. This change comes after the agency received complaints from owners of handguns with barrels shorter than 6 inches who were unable to find mounts that would allow them to shoot properly without risking damage to their handguns’ Barrels. The decision allows owners of pistols with barrels lengths under 6 inches to use existing scope mounts as long as they meet certain requirements, including having a threaded barrel and using components made by American Outdoor Brands Inc., which is headquartered in Springfield, Mo. Previously, only rifles with barrel lengths over 26 inches were able to be equipped with these mount types. The rule change applies only to pistols currently possessed in the United States, and does not apply to any other firearms. It is expected that this rule change will result in an increase in sales for handgun manufacturers who can now offer customers expanded mounting options for their products

It is the most populous city located in the state of South Carolina and second-most populous city in the Carolinas after Charlotte. North Myrtle Beach is situated on US 1 south of Charleston, on an estuary of the Ashley River that forms part of the Atlantic Ocean. The first permanent European settlement in what is now North Myrtle Beach was by English settlers who called it Elizabeth City (now Elizabethtown). The town was chartered on March 8, 1795 by General John Forrest as Council Bluffs for military purposes only; it never had any municipal functions. A detachment from Forrest's army under Colonel James Robertson built Fort Brooke about 1810 on Hilton Head Island for military defense against French attacks during the War of 1812. In 1820, Haley sold land to John Aiken and others for $1 per acre and began trading with Native Americans here known as "Aken's Fort". On May 22nd, 1865, Confederate Major General Robert Ewell attacked Aiken's Fort while American forces were garrisoning it; Ewell's attack resulted in one death and many injuries among Confederate troops and civilians. In 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant invaded South Carolina from Georgia through Charlotte via Wilmington and then moved northward through Columbia towards Tullahoma before reaching within striking distance of Aiken's Fort; upon learning of this impending assault he ordered his army to halt just outside Charleston so that reinforcements could be brought up from Wilmington. When night fell local residents began coming out to defend their homes but soon realized they would not be able to hold off Grant long enough to save their town; accordingly they surrendered unconditionally without battle or resistance when he arrived within earshot with artillery pieces moored offshore ready to bombardment if necessary Aiken died at his home shortly after surrendering his fortifications. Aftermath: Aiken County was created November 3rd 1868 from Beaufort County with a population size of 521 Fort Brooke became Ansonville Female Industrial School near present day Ft Myers FL on December 11th 1870 which closed October 15th 1916 due to competition by Tuskegee Institute On January 12th 1899__________________________________Ansonvillefemaleindustrial school reopened named Browns Ferry Female Industrial School after Browns Ferry Bridge over Ashley River opening its doors today
The town of North Myrtle Beach was founded on August 29, 1892 by William A. Dyer and his wife, Fannie. The town grew quickly due to its location on the Gulf of Mexico and its easy access to water supplies. By 1910, the population had reached 2,000 people. In 1925, the United States Post Office moved from Brownsville to North Myrtle Beach because of the growing population. In 1933, North Myrtle Beach became a city. On December 1, 1984, it merged with neighboring South Carolina towns Greenville and Beaufort in order to form the current city of North Myrtle Beach.
