North Myrtle Beach is a town in South Carolina, United States. The population was 21,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson metropolitan area. North Myrtle Beach is located on the banks of the Ashley River and is known for its golf courses, shopping malls, and beaches. The first people to live in what is now North Myrtle Beach were Lenape Indians who moved from present day Delaware in 1675. In 1737 Englishman John Calloway established a trading post here with his family name being applied to this spot until 1827 when it became known as "Myrtleburgh". At various times during its history it was also spelled "Newbern", "Norman" or "Norfolk". In 1824 Augusta Co., then within Union territory, passed an ordinance creating a town here called Fort Moultrie after General Andrew Jackson's flagship at that time in Mobile Bay. On March 12 of that year Captain James Hargrave reported that he had landed 2d battalion U.S. Marines at Fortress Moultrie (now Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst) and proceeded to build stores and barracks there for them while stationed at Fort Moultrie during the Mexican–American War; these are now among the earliest surviving structures on what would become North Myrtle Beach Boulevard today. When Charleston annexed Augusta Co., Fort Moultrie reverted to military control by Union forces under Major General Winfield Scott on July 9, 1832 as part of that larger move which included all of Confederate South Carolina into Union hands. The town of North Myrtle Beach was founded in 1871 by J.D. Hill and named for the native American tribe the Cherokees. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the mouth of the Ashley River, which made it a popular shipping point for goods exported from South Carolina. In 1895, North Myrtle Beach became one of two towns in south central SC to be established as a city, following the passage of an act by the state legislature that allowed such cities to be created in those counties that voted in favor. The city's growth continued through the years, with population growth reaching more than 100,000 by 1925. In 1941, after Hurricane Hugo hit southern SC, North Myrtle Beach responded with Operation Neptune's Spear, which aided local residents during damage caused by Hurricane Hugo. North Myrtle Beach is also home to several military installations including Fort Myer and Fort Wagner.
