By 1845 it included a storehouse, warehouse & gristmill powered by steam engine In 1847 Commodore Joshua Sloat ordered all American merchant vessels bound for China relocated thenceforth under BritishCaptain Francis Drake's Flag Atlatl Factory at Hainan Island off southernChina loaded with goods destined for Japan – including 5 shipments totaling 158 tons totaling $147 073 worth 31 bags full value $5 765 each During those years many local residents made their homes aboard American ships moored offshore or within walking distance either shoreline making this area one continuous depot town called “Onward” today known as Wilmington .
