North Myrtle Beach is a city in and the county seat of Beaufort County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 34,905 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hilton Head Island (South Carolina) Metropolitan Statistical Area. North Myrtle Beach was founded on January 1, 1892 as a small town on Beaufort Island. The first post office opened in 1893. In 1951, it became an incorporated city. The name "North Myrtle Beach" comes from the island's coastal cape which forms its eastern border and has been known for seafood since before European settlement began in this area. The history of North Myrtle Beach goes back to 1892 when developers found saltpeter resources on Beaufort Island and decided to establish a small town to exploit them. A post office called "Beaufort" was established in 1893 and remained in operation until 1916 when it was moved to nearby New Smyrna Beach due to high mail traffic between those two towns during that time period. On January 1, 1892, North Myrtle Beach became an incorporated city with jurisdiction over all of Beaufort County including the communities of New Smyrna Beach and Surfside Village located on neighbouring Islantic Sound opposite Beaufort Island. In 1951, following enactment of the South Carolina Constitution which provided for incorporation by vote by all Unorganized Territories within state boundaries once they reached 20,000 residents or had adopted certain ordinances providing for municipal government within such limits pursuant to Resolution No., HJ 2157 (1951), North Myrtle beach became one of thirteen cities statewide designated as "inalienable urban areas." This designation placed these cities into a category with other large metropolitan areas such as Atlanta or Jacksonville Florida which were not yet incommon places outside their respective metropolitan areas but were considered urban areas because they had significant economic development potential associated with them despite lacking statutory governance authority over their inhabitants unlike smaller local municipalities like those around Charleston SC which were municipally chartered only after passage of a state statute enabling charters subject thereto without prior approval from the State Legislature). North Myrtle Beach is a town in Charleston County, South Carolina. The population was 129 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Savannah–Hilton Head, GA-SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. North Myrtle Beach was founded on August 29, 1876 by General John W. Pershing and his wife Elizabeth Cofield Pershing as Palm Beach Township in what is now Charleston County. In 1850, General Rufus King set out from Augusta, Georgia to explore new lands in what are now north and central SC. He named the area "Myrtle Beach" after an evergreen tree he found there. In 1856, American forces burned down the old courthouse in Palm Beach Township to avoid capture by Confederate forces during the American Civil War (1861-1865). A new courthouse was built on First Street in 1861 and renamed for General King: "King's Court House". The first schoolroom was erected on Meeting Street near present day Bahia High School in 1865; today's building houses parts of the Historical Museum of North Myrtle Beaches Incorporated which opened its doors on October 1, 1984. In 1870, George Washington Steele bought some land east of downtown NMB for $2 per acre and laid out a township called Steele's Landing with a small harbor on it that developed into North Myrtle Beach proper. On December 22nd of that year he became one of only two men to own all or part of what today makes up North MyrtleBeach proper - he also received title to all future water rights along Mosquito Creek until they were sold off in 1904 by then Mayor Harry Saucier to developer John Hargrave Johnson Sr.). By 1871, over 20 settlers had arrived here - many being farmers who brought their animals with them when they moved westward through southern SC during the Great Migration (the early years of this century). In addition to Steele's Landing/north shoreline development there were two smaller towns established within boundaries defined by Admiral David Dixon: Indian Rocks (in modern Orangeburg) and Mayport (now Demerara Island). Today these towns still maintain active local economies with various cultural activities happening each year around town festivals etc.; but much has changed since those days including significant annexations/ subdivisions taking place within city limits over time! Another important event related to northshore development took place when Drayton Coffin donated 5 acres NW sideSRR tracks across from US Highway 17 bridge for use as airport property; this contribution also helped spur heavy industry development adjacent to runway capabilities during World War II! Finally another significant milestone occured when plans were drawn up for a cablecar system connecting downtown NMB with east beachfront properties overlooking Mosquito Creek; construction began but never completed due largely to economic instability caused by military presence Folks living near airport soon discovered high levels OF asbestos throughout facility resulting in very costly clean-up efforts! Today North Myrtle Beach retains much if not all its history from prior eras while enjoying increased exposure as an attractive tourist destination due both nationally & internationally due its unique mixture of antique architecture (& lots more!) as well as recent investment totaling nearly $100 million dollars+. Despite such growth opportunities though no overnightregnate changes have occurred without incident... However things must always eventually slow down & peace will resume before any major developments become imminent :)
