By 1800, North Myrtle Beach had become a thriving city with over 10,000 residents. In 1822 Samuel Slater founded Slatersville next door to North Myrtle Beach on land that he purchased from James Fenton for $2 per acre. This settlement served as the nucleus around which many later development occurred in both towns. By 1840 there were over 20 thousand people living in various parts ofCharleston County when President James Kenedy announced that Charleston would be split into two counties – Orangeburg and Yorktown – based on population size only! However, because of economic reasons several small villages quickly emerged throughout the county: Bladenboro (later known as Burlington), Mount Pleasant (later known as Surf City), Newberry Heights (later known as Indianola), Pee Dee Hills (later known as Poindexter), Summerdale (later known as Cape Fear), Winder Plantation and much more! It wasn’t until 1849 when a group of businessmen led by Neil Tilghman bought 1/4 mile east of Slatersville alluvial gold deposits totaling 168 ounces! From this moment forward until 1865 when Gold Rush fever hit southern California things changed drastically for north Myrtle Beachers! In 1861 local resident Isaac Broughton organized a militia unit called “The Cavalry Regiment” to protect citizens during The American Civil War; this unit eventually became known as Battery C Confederate Artillery Corps #511! In 1865 Union General Ulysses S Grant ordered General Order No 5 from Sherman ordering all Confederate forces within five miles of Savannah Georgia destroyed including those at Fort Fisher!!! From then until 1898 no baseball or softball games were played at NMB despite attempts by our fathers coach Geo Ryan Jr.. Finally we regained our former glory hosting our very own state championship game vs Clemson University !! All kidding aside let us just say our town has had more than its share of good times…..
